Day 26, Month 07, Turn 01, AIVAS Reckoning, First Long Pass

Eastern Weyr: Upper Bowl East

The eastern section of the upper bowl is flat. Compared to the rest of this bowl, it's almost polished. The smell of grass seed and dragon oil permeates the air here, occasionally joined by the sweet scent of timothy hay. On the far eastern wall is the entrance to the beast caverns, surrounded by the strong wooden fencing that encloses the seedlings of grass in the area that will be the Feeding Pens. Further north, the weyrling barracks are nestled into the northeast corner; the whole area is a constant haze of activity. Most of the cross-bowl traffic is further west of here, kept centered by the uneven lay of that ground. Because of that, this area is a popular spot for those who want to spend free time lounging in the sun or taking a meal outdoors. To the south is the ever-growing scoop in the ground where - hopefully - the lake will be soon.

J'cobi isn't often seen around the Weyr when there isn't business to be attended to, and there are more than a few rumours as to where exactly he goes. For example, some stay he spies on his subordinates from the shadows. Others say he is off harvesting souls. But then again, don't believe everything you hear. For instead, J'cobi is making his way towards the barracks with a number of hides in his hands and an unpleasant scowl on his face.

It's simply another day for Uveline, with a cluster of students - of very wide ages - seated out in the bowl under her tutelage. One of the most common lessons has been learning about the local plantlife, and today is no exception, as the continually growing ranks of the Weyr has brought in more people unfamiliar with the South. Uveline is passing between the groups, seperated by age and general knowledge of the area, working with them as needed.

Oh, good. Students. J'cobi frowns as he attempts to make his way past a group and onwards to his destination, pausing to try and extradite himself from a small gathering that suddenly profess extreme interest in the Weyrleader. He'd just push past but he's certain that would not go down well at all. He glances up towards Uveline once before gesturing in the direction of the issue.

Uveline hears the change in sound as the group mobs J'cobi and turns, frowning toward them. Oh. "That's enough of that," she calls as she approaches, scowling at her students. "You all have plants to be studying, and you cannot be interrupting either your studies or the Weyrleader!" she continues, voice firm with reprimand. "Back to your seats, all of you, and I expect you to be ready to be tested on your studies!"

Free of the students, J'cobi looks set to beat a hasty retreat for a moment before something gets his attention. He pauses for a moment, watching Uveline go about the teaching in silence. He's no longer being bothered, but he doesn't move away - instead he just watches, arms crossed.

It doesn't take long for Uveline to restore order, though some of the older students from the guilty pack mutter complaints - 'who put you in charge' type grousing. "When you're assigned to me for lessons, you /will/ listen," she retorts firmly, staring down the problem students. "Unless you want it reported to your masters, or the Headwoman, that you are ignoring your lessons and not fit to be in residence here?" That counter settles the last of the verbal complaints, though some still look daggers at their teacher. Unruffled, Uveline takes a moment to approach J'cobi, since he hasn't left. "I hope they didn't disrupt you too badly, Weyrleader?" she asks, dipping her head in deferential greeting.

Uveline nods, self-conciously straightening her shirt. "Yes, I'm Uveline. Did you need something, sir?" She glances back and forth from J'cobi to her students, making sure they are still working. She frowns at those taking time to watch her and the Weyrleader, and heads bend back to their tasks.

"Hm? No," J'cobi shakes his head, still giving Uveline a careful look that may begin to border on overlong, "Why do you ask?"

Uveline shrugs, twitching a hand toward J'cobi and the ground. "You didn't keep going after the students left you, so I was guessing there was a reason you stayed. Couldn't think of anything other than needing a hand, so, that's why I asked," she answers.

"Ah," J'cobi allows a long, full silence to pass between them before he speaks again, " No. Contrary to popular belief, I do not need assistance with everything save for organizing the wings."

Uveline shrugs again, taking no offense. "Alright. If you don't need anything, then, I'll get back to my students. Have a good day, sir." She turns back toward the students, moving to join the group that had accosted J'cobi, clearly planning to start the test she mentioned before.

J'cobi watches her go for a minute, pausing to put a hand in his pocket before he calls out after her, "Uveline."

Uveline turns back from the students, frowning at the Weyrleader's call. "Yes, sir?" Realizing she's frowning, Uveline blanks her face, unable to summon up a smile when she's so puzzled.

"Stop teaching," J'cobi announces, producing a white knot from his pocket which he tosses casually in Uveline's direction without so much as a smirk, "Start learning."

Uveline's blank expression turns to one of clear confusion as she reaches for - and misses - the tossed knot. Frowning again, she crouches to pick it up, and her frown deepens as she realizes what it is. "Sir? You want me to be a candidate?" she asks, tone clearly puzzled.

"You'd better start picking up on things a lot faster than that," J'cobi says with a snort, turning about to carry on his merry way, "And work on those reflexes."

Uveline's frown becomes a scowl at his words, and she mutters - low and to herself - "It isn't reflexes. I'm just not good at catching things. And why would I expect to be asked to stand? And… Shards. What is Kestian going to say?" Shaking her head in puzzlement, Uveline pockets the knot and turns back to her students, resolving to figure out the situation after the lessons are done for the day.
