Halls

The crafthalls of Pern are places of creation and innovation for specialists in a particular trade. While a good holderwoman would be capable of binding a small injury and taking care of standard illnesses with simple home remedies, it would take a proper healer, a crafter trained by the Healer Hall, to diagnose more intensive issues or to treat them. While the crafthalls themselves are located on the property of various Holds generally due to nearness to raw materials for the craft, they are independent of the Holds themselves and crafters look to their own masters for leadership rather than the local Holder or Lord Holder.

Please note: While we do have references to some of the modern crafts created since the discovery of AIVAS, the Dolphincraft is in the process of being created on-camera.

Bakercraft Hall

Colors: Light tan and brown
Leader(s): Masterbaker Arawyn
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Benden Weyr
Local Hold: Benden Hold
Technology: The Bakercrafters are always interested in new methods from the past, so they've embraced anything coming from AIVAS that won't get them yelled at by the Traditionalists. Or that they can sneak into the pies without the Traditionalists realizing it.
Notes: The Bakercraft is one of the two crafts on Pern (the other being Weavercraft) where the Craftmaster is a woman as often as it is a man. Like with many crafts that are a daily craft found in every Hold, Hall, and Weyr, the bakers are the specialists who keep the standards for cooking and baking across Pern and also special recipes and techniques that only they know. They also travel Pern to help teach regular holders new methods to improve or be more creative with their meals.

Beastcraft Hall

Colors: On a white field, a yellow Bull's Head
Leader(s): Masterherder Yorn
Overall Political Viewpoint: Traditional
Beholden to: Ista Weyr
Local Hold: Keroon Hold
Technology: Surprisingly, the advanced technique of artificial insemination survived the Turns from the original Crossing, but the craft is mildly interested in Ancient techniques that have been lost, but not as much as other crafts are greedy to go back to old methods. They prefer tried and true methods that stood the test of time.
Notes: The Beastcraft has no involvement with the veterinarian care of dragonkin (dragons, firelizards, whers). Beastcrafters are not only responsible for the care of livestock but also their breeding programs to ensure their survival against things such as the Great Plague in the 6th Pass. Part of their mandate is also to ensure that 'sport' creatures are not created.

Computerer's Hall

Colors: On a white field, a bright red Computer Chip
Leader(s): Mastercomputersmith Kiordalin
Overall Political Viewpoint: Progressive
Beholden to: Eastern Weyr
Local Hold: Landing
Technology: The Computerer's Hall focuses on the computers rebuilt from the parts discovered in the Catherine Caves (although they're not known by that name these days). Unfortunately, because the Smiths are still struggling with the recreation of those parts from the original schematics, each one is treated as precious and irreplaceable and thus in need of protection from the Traditionalists with violent tendencies.
Notes: All Hall terminals, whether located at the main facility at Landing or scattered at other Holds and Halls across Pern, tend to have one or two burly crafters whose job is to ensure the terminals aren't destroyed by hardcore Traditionalists.

Dolphincraft Hall

Colors: As yet undetermined
Leader(s): As yet undetermined
Overall Political Viewpoint: Progressive
Beholden to: Eastern Weyr
Local Hold: Landing
Technology: The Dolphincraft only needs seafaring technology but since its inception has been intensely tied to Landing and AIVAS, so it will always nab up anything new to help this nebulous craft get off the ground.
Notes: There is an ongoing TP on-game that is featuring the creation of the craft. ICly, a craftmaster hasn't yet been chosen, nor have the colors been worked out (they will be the canon ones eventually, but it hasn't been played out yet). Please review the announcements BB on-game for the latest info or just ask Artemis.

Farmcraft Hall

Colors: On a white field, a golden yellow Plowshare
Leader(s): Masterfarmer Kifren
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Ista Weyr
Local Hold: Nerat Hold
Technology: The Farmcraft is always interested in new methods of tilling the land and conserving it for future farmers, although there are always the odd hidebound crafters who prefer their own knowledge and experience.
Notes: While there was resistance to the use of grubs as an answer to Threadfall, historically regarded as a parasite, the Farmcraft has embraced their use since it was proven that grubbed land actually produces a higher yield of grain or other crops. The craft pretty much stays out of the political fight wandering around Pern. The fields need to be planted or harvested, after all, and they don't do it themselves.

Harper Hall

Colors: On a white field, a rich blue Harp
Leader(s): Masterharper Gallifren
Overall Political Viewpoint: Progressive
Beholden to: Fort Weyr
Local Hold: Fort Hold
Technology: The Harper Hall promptly had electrical lighting installed in the gloomier sections of the Hall, particularly the Archives. There are also a couple of computers parked in the Great Hall in the corner for students to retrieve and print music scores and copies of the Charter as needed.
Notes: The Scribing sub-craft has nearly been supplanted by the Printercraft and the products of the Papercraft, but some of the most hardcore Traditionalists still insist on hand-copied Records and sheet music and thus the Archives still have ink and hides on hand. Also, with the discovery of AIVAS and Landing, the Masterharper seems to spend more of his time out and about on Pern, either soothing ruffled feathers, or learning all he can of the knowledge his predecessors were smart enough to embrace.

Healer Hall

Colors: On a white field, a purple Caduceus
Leader(s): Masterhealer Cabet
Overall Political Viewpoint: Progressive
Beholden to: Fort Weyr
Local Hold: Fort Hold
Technology: For Turns, the Healers used specific technology and techniques, but with the advent of AIVAS, a craft desperate to put itself out of business quickly latched onto any 'new' technique to treat illness and cure disease and heal the sick. Their biggest problem isn't technology, it's getting hidebound holders to believe that things like surgery can work. Also, the Healers have the second greatest concentration of computer terminals (and a burly guard or two) outside of Landing and the Computerer's Hall itself.
Notes: The Healer Hall is swiftly finding out that many of its techniques are outdated, and there's a very firm division between practitioners. Older ones refuse to work with the new techniques, but the newer generations of healers are more open to ancient ideas coming from AIVAS. The Hall's overall tone is that of progression, even if the notion of cutting open a human body seems to squick more than one otherwise solid healer. The notions of using the dolphins (still called shipfish by most of Pern in our timeline) as diagnosticians has not yet been invented although that will be played out on-camera when the time is right.

Minecraft Hall

Colors: On a white field, a black Pick and Shovel in Saltire
Leader(s): Masterminer Morrig
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Telgar Weyr
Local Hold: Crom Hold
Technology: The Minecraft is only interested in any technology that will help them mine more and also with higher margins of safety. Other than that, they prefer to be left alone to do their jobs because they don't have time to fuss with the politics of Pern.
Notes: Please remember that the Todd McCaffrey novels about watchwhers and their uses in mining aren't canon for our game. Firelizards are used these days to check for dangerous gases underground.

Papercraft Hall

Colors: On a white field, forest green Print Rollers
Leader(s): Masterpapersmith Nagian
Overall Political Viewpoint: Progressive
Beholden to: Benden Weyr
Local Hold: Lemos Hold
Technology: Most of the techniques now in use were retrieved from AIVAS, an improvement of the first Woodcrafter who tinkered with the notion of trying to replace decaying hides with a neater material.
Notes: Naturally, the Papercraft is strongly allied with both its parent craft, Woodcraft, and the Harpers and Smithcraft. Many of its creations are promptly filched by the Printer's Hall for obvious reasons.

Plastic-craft Hall

Colors: On a white field, three bright red Roundels
Leader(s): Master Samms
Overall Political Viewpoint: Progressive
Beholden to: Telgar Weyr
Local Hold: Telgar Hold
Technology: Bolstered by the latest advances due to AIVAS-derived knowledge, the Plastic-craft remains on the forefront of technology. While some hidebound people on Pern might recoil from the odd-feeling material, most grudgingly acknowledge that the new plastic-made wharves at Tillek are superior to the wooden ones of the past.
Notes: Because the Woodcraft splintered off into the Paper- and Printercrafts, there isn't a great deal of intercraft concerns that this upstart craft will supplant the Woodcraft. There are also enough traditionalists around Pern that utterly refuse to patronize this craft and its unholy plastics, regardless of the benefits.

Printer's Hall

Colors: On a white field, a rich blue Printing and Binding Press
Leader(s): Masterprinter Larendion
Overall Political Viewpoint: Progressive
Beholden to: Eastern Weyr
Local Hold: Landing
Technology: Comparatively, the printing presses in use on Pern are more like the early 19th century Earth than the massive newspaper printing presses currently being phased out in real life with the advent of the internet.
Notes: The main Printer's Hall is at Landing, with secondary installations at Ruatha and Lemos.

Seacraft Hall (Fishercraft Hall)

Colors: On a white field, a sea-blue fish
Leader(s): Masterfisher Orollar
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: High Reaches Weyr
Local Hold: Tillek Hold
Technology: The timeless tech of the sea. However, they are always interested in any new stuff that AIVAS can provide to help prevent the loss of life and limb during squalls. The latest and greatest farviewers are in great demand, as are accurate charts of the sea.
Notes: The Seacraft prides itself on its skills, but as a craft, it refuses to play politics. Captains are trusted with their best judgment on what they'll take on board and what they won't. Just like any group of people, there are those who can be trusted and those who are a bit shady. The Masterfisher knows or suspects some captains of being less trustworthy, and he's got his eye on them, but he can't see all, no matter what cool new farviewer the Smithcraft can make for him. The Seacraft is also responsible for building their own ships of all sizes, although some Sea Holds do rival the main Seacraft in the quality of vessels made.

Smithcraft Hall

Colors: On a white field, a bright red Anvil
Leader(s): Mastersmith Harleon
Overall Political Viewpoint: Progressive
Beholden to: Telgar Weyr
Local Hold: Telgar Hold
Technology: Aside from Landing itself, the Smithcraft has the highest level of technology on the planet. Always at the forefront of new tech, the discovery of AIVAS revolutionized the craft overnight. Many of the leading-edge innovations are now mostly being handled by the Technician craft, particularly for the newer technology that's light years ahead of the medieval tech found on most of Pern.
Notes: While some may be concerned at the speed at which the Smithcraft transformed itself and of the swiftness of new developments, almost too fast to properly consider for potential dangers, it is a rare smith indeed who prefers the old ways.

Starcraft Hall

Colors: On a white field, a bright red Eight-Pointed Star
Leader(s): Masterstarsmith Donal
Overall Political Viewpoint: Progressive
Beholden to: Eastern Weyr
Local Hold: Landing
Technology: As the Smithcraft and its subcraft Glass-smithing began creating distance-viewers, now called telescopes after the Ancient term, the Starcraft continues improving its hardware with every new technique the colonists' databanks can provide them.
Notes: The Starsmiths are now based at Landing, so they can more easily access the information found in AIVAS.

Tannercraft Hall

Colors: On a white field, an outstretched Hide in sienna-brown
Leader(s): Mastertanner Moldavi
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Igen Weyr
Local Hold: Igen Hold
Technology: The tanners are only really interested in any lost techniques relating to their craft that will allow them to create more supple or sturdy leathers, dyes, etc.
Notes: Probably the smelliest craft on Pern, the tanners are also the ones responsible for ensuring that dragonriders have strong leathers for their riding straps. While there are non-craft leathermen and women in every Hold, Hall, and Weyr, only the very best quality leathers are suitable to be given to the Weyrs for their use. Even the Lord Holders get second-best in this case.

Technician's Hall

Colors: On a white field, a bright red Cog
Leader(s): Mastertech Fulnar
Overall Political Viewpoint: Progressive
Beholden to: Eastern Weyr
Local Hold: Landing
Technology: Home to the highest tech on the planet save what is in AIVAS's databanks that can't be recreated on Pern.
Notes: Due to the hostile politics floating around the planet, many technicians stick to known tech-friendly locations or keep their heads down if they have to go to Traditionalist enclaves. A couple of large and unfriendly-looking men tend to keep a weather eye on visitors to the Hall itself to prevent any unpleasantness.

Vintnercraft Hall (Winecraft Hall)

Colors: On a white field, a dark red Wineskin
Leader(s): Mastervintner Gordren
Overall Political Viewpoint: Traditional
Beholden to: Benden Weyr
Local Hold: Benden Hold
Technology: Benden's Hall is often regarded superior to its Tillek counterpart due to the secret vats cadged from the remains of the ships that brought the settlers to Pern. The origin of the ceramic vats has been lost to antiquity, but it's considered a trade secret that they don't even share with the Tillek Hall.
Notes: The Vintners have two main branches of the craft, while they do have smaller Halls where grapes grow or the lush fruits of Nerat's rainforests. The Benden Hall is the senior of all of these, while the Tillek Hall jovially competes with them every turn for the favor of Pern's wine-drinking populace.

Weavercraft Hall

Colors: On a white field, a lavender Bolt of Cloth
Leader(s): Masterweaver Torina
Overall Political Viewpoint: Progressive
Beholden to: Fort Weyr
Local Hold: Southern Boll Hold
Technology: The weavers lament the loss of techniques and skills over the Turns, so they're eager for any lost knowledge that can be cadged out of AIVAS's databanks.
Notes: The weavercraft is the only craft that is more often led by a woman than a man, and today's craft is no exception. The craft focuses on two main activities: the creation of cloth and fabrics and the use of these fabrics to create garments. Southern Boll Hold is ideal for the craft, as it has vast fields of flax, cotton, and sisal.

Woodcraft Hall

Colors: On a white field, a forest-green Conifer
Leader(s): Masterwoodsmith Berligan
Overall Political Viewpoint: Progressive
Beholden to: Benden Weyr
Local Hold: Lemos Hold
Technology: Other than interest in new ways of preserving lumber and cultivating the forests in a sustainable fashion, the Woodcraft doesn't really pay too much attention to recovered information from AIVAS.
Notes: The Woodcraft, relatively newly split off from the Smithcraft in Telgar, is still tied to its parent craft. With its own separate crafthall in Lemos near the precious hardwood forests cultivated by previous Lemos Lord Holders, and promises from Benden Weyr that their craft material will be protected against Threadfall, the Woodcraft has finally grown into its own, pun entirely intended. It is also tied to the newer crafts of Papercraft and Printercraft, both of whom grew out of AIVAS-given techniques for using wood pulp for other uses.
