Holds

The Holds are home to the majority of Pernese and collect the farmland, pastureland, and most territory on the planet. Led by a Lord (or rarely Lady) Holder, the major Holds are the biggest political players on Pern. Smaller Holds are led by a regular Holder and his lady and look to a major Hold for leadership. In the following list, a minor Hold will be noted under the major Hold it looks to.

Benden Hold

Colors: On a violet field, three red Bends Sinister
Leader(s): Lord Voronis and Lady Isabella
Overall Political Viewpoint: Traditional
Beholden to: Benden Weyr
Local Crafthalls: Bakercraft, Vintnercraft
Technology: Being the third major Hold founded (not second as some might think), Benden boasts smoother hallways than most later areas.
Notes: Benden Hold is known for its hosting of the primary Vintnercraft Hall and the felicitous location of its grape-growing fields. It also trades somewhat on its past history as one of the three faithful Holds that stuck with Benden Weyr and kept tithing when all others stopped, prior to the 9th Pass. Recently, the brother of Lord Bitra offered to marry the eldest daughter of Benden's previous Lord (he had no male issue and there were no males in near enough status in all the Bloodline). When she refused to marry him on the wedding day itself, he opted to marry her younger sister to ensure that the ancient Benden Bloodline remained in nominal possession of the Hold, and the elder sister fled.

Greystones Hold

Colors: On a violet or purple field, four medium blue Roundels
Leader(s): Holder Shanrel and his lady Nerys
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Benden Hold, Benden Weyr
Local Crafthalls: Minor Minecraft Hall
Technology: Nothing new since turns past
Notes: Greystones is aptly named, for stone is its chief export. The Minecraft Hall here is devoted solely to the art of stonemasonry, excavating and shaping stone blocks for major building projects or lesser stone items such as benches and planters.

Valley Hold

Colors: Violet and blue
Leader(s): Holder Jorkin and his lady Livona
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Benden Hold, Benden Weyr
Local Crafthalls: None
Technology: Valley Hold has only traditional technology, not really feeling the need to add more to their Hold.
Notes: One of the minor Benden-area Holds, Valley is home to some of the choicer grape-growing fields that the Vintners are after.

Bitra Hold

Colors: On a dusty red field, four white Eight-Pointed Stars
Leader(s): Lord Harlin and Lady Rabinna
Overall Political Viewpoint: Traditional
Beholden to: Benden Weyr
Local Crafthalls: None
Technology: Same as always.
Notes: Bitra is known for its gambling. Dragonpoker is a huge draw for people with marks to risk from across Pern, with fortunes won and lost at the cards or dice. For sore losers, grumbling about possible fixing of games is indemic, although no one's been able to prove it enough to break the Holds' famous autonomy. Also, original colonist Avril Bitra is no longer remembered as the reason for the Hold's naming. By this time, Bitrans only believe that the Hold was named for someone who was wrongfully accused of certain crimes, a mindset of persecution that has been perpetuated for millennia.

Crom Hold

Colors: On a yellow-gold field, three light blue Bends
Leader(s): Lord Groll (widowed young, never remarried)
Overall Political Viewpoint: Traditional
Beholden to: Telgar Weyr
Local Crafthalls: Minecraft
Technology: Crom only bothers with newer technology that will help its local craft excavate more from the ground and thus ignores most of the rest of the AIVAS-generated technologies on the planet.
Notes: Crom Hold is one of the more sexist Holds, with women holding the fewest authority roles than nearly every other Hold on Pern. Anyone who says so in Crom borders tends to get quickly shanked for suggesting it, but whispers in dark corners elsewhere on Pern hint that Lord Groll may have had a hand in his wife's death. Also, that he prefers men, but we dare you to say that in his hearing.

Greenfields Hold

Colors:On an aqua field, medium blue Bends
Leader(s): Holder Jonn and his woman Jaina
Overall Political Viewpoint: Traditional
Beholden to: Crom Hold, Telgar Weyr
Local Crafthalls: None
Technology: Greenfields has a traditional Hold setting, no new tech as it doesn't relate to their daily lives in raising grain.
Notes: Greenfields is one of the main breadbaskets of Pern, raising all sorts of grain for the rest of the planet. Its main hold only hosts a small village's worth of people, while numerous cotholds dot the landscape.

Fort Hold

Colors: On a brown field, a yellow Lattice
Leader(s): Lord Gregor and Lady Zarin
Overall Political Viewpoint: Traditional
Beholden to: Fort Weyr
Local Crafthalls: Harper Hall, Healer Hall
Technology: As the first Hold, Fort hosts the biggest collection of First Pass technology of all the Holds of Pern. Some, unfortunately, is forgotten or in severe disuse after 2500 turns. Stonecutters from the original settlers ensured that many rooms had useful baths, and the trappings of old solar panels and electricity can also be found. The massive doors to the Hold are made from metal scavenged and reforged from parts on the Dawn Sisters, the three starships that brought settlers to Pern.
Notes: Fort's Lord Holder tends to chair any Holders' Conclave due to its position as the first Hold (and don't you forget it!). Since the tenure of past Lord Groghe, Fort has stayed solidly on Benden Weyr's good side, although its traditional stance is more due to the need to ensure that change on Pern doesn't get crazy and out of hand. However, the Lord can be persuaded to sensible things as long as there is some justification and proof for the change. He doesn't remain stuck in the past just to maintain Tradition at all costs.

Fort Sea Hold

Colors: Yellow and brown
Leader(s): Holder Sogrann and his lady Bellin
Overall Political Viewpoint: Traditional
Beholden to: Fort Hold, Fort Weyr
Local Crafthalls: Minor Seacraft
Technology: The Hold has very little tech other than what applies to the sea and fishing. It's interested in a few new things, but nothing that would raise the ire of either their beholden Lord or the hardcore anti-technology movement on Pern.
Notes: The Sea Hold maintains a few small boats for the use of the Harper Hall when harpers need to make discreet voyages South.

Peyton Hold

Colors: Yellow and brown
Leader(s): Holder Liryia (widow of Uniar)
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Fort Hold, Fort Weyr
Local Crafthalls: None
Technology: The Hold is slowly importing newer technology to modernize.
Notes: Peyton is currently the only Hold, major or minor, that is Held by a female in her own right. There is considerable pressure for her to remarry after the recent death of her husband, Holder Uniar.

High Reaches Hold

Colors: Per Pale, dark blue and tan
Leader(s): Lord Skarel and Lady Velanine
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: High Reaches Weyr
Local Crafthalls: Minor Weavercraft Hall, Glass-smith
Technology: High Reaches, while of a progressive mindset, still hasn't embraced much of the new technology appearing all over Pern, as much of it would not survive well in the cold temperatures that the Hold has most of the year.
Notes: High Reaches practices cold-weather felting and knitting and also has skilled shipwrights, second only to those at Tillek. It's also actively suppressing the knowledge that Lord Fax was born there.

Balen Hold

Colors: On a pine-green field, three peridot-green Bends
Leader(s): Holder Pirran and his lady Mabri
Overall Political Viewpoint: Traditional
Beholden to: High Reaches Hold, High Reaches Weyr
Local Crafthalls: None
Technology: Balen has no new technology and doesn't seem interested in any.
Notes: Balen features lumber mills and manufactures furniture and ship fittings. Not to be confused with Hold Balan in Telgar territory.

Lewis Hold

Colors: Dark blue and tan
Leader(s): Holder Reandan (single)
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: High Reaches Hold, High Reaches Weyr
Local Crafthalls: None
Technology: Lewis doesn't import any new tech, it's too busy with its lumber operations.
Notes: Lewis' main export is lumber, both for ships at Tillek, or for woodcarving of fixtures for the ships. Its Holder is on the marriage market and despite his gruff behavior, several other Holders are seeking an alliance via their marriageable daughters.

Ogren Hold

Colors: Dark blue and tan
Leader(s): Holder Sherlon and his lady Natty
Overall Political Viewpoint: Traditional
Beholden to: High Reaches Hold, High Reaches Weyr
Local Crafthalls: None
Technology: Ogren doesn't care for new technology, preferring to keep things as they were.
Notes: Perhaps one of the fiercest Traditional strongholds, Ogren is almost hostile to the suggestions of the Smithcraft for simple devices that were invented since the 8th Pass but before the advent of the 9th Pass, much less any new inventions since the Oldtimers came forward. Holder Sherlon has made it pointedly clear that he doesn't recognize the existence of any of the new technologically-oriented crafts, and their practitioners are not welcome in his Hold.

Pars Hold

Colors: Dark blue and tan
Leader(s): Holder Aban and his lady Honoria
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: High Reaches Hold, High Reaches Weyr
Local Crafthalls: None
Technology: Pars doesn't make a concerted effort to bring in new tech, but if someone happens to have something new, they won't turn it away unless it'll turn the Hold upside down.
Notes: Holder Aban is actively seeking firelizard clutches for his Hold, as for some curious reason, not many of the creatures have been Impressed by his people. He and his lady both have them, but a brown and a blue, so they can't generate more firelizards themselves.

River Bend Hold

Colors: Dark blue and tan
Leader(s): Holder Girton and his lady Marlina
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: High Reaches Hold, High Reaches Weyr
Local Crafthalls: None
Technology: The only tech River Bend is really interested in is anything that will help keep people and livestock warm during the cold months of the Turn.
Notes: River Bend is somewhat irreverently referred to as 'the Iceblock' due to its chief export: ice.

Igen Hold

Colors: Per Pale, bright red and golden yellow
Leader(s): Lord Yrand and Lady Arinna
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Igen Weyr
Local Crafthalls: Minor Minecraft Hall, Tannercraft Hall
Technology: Igen's only real interest in the new technology coming out of AIVAS and the Smithcraft involves any cooling tech they've got floating around. Other than that, the Igenites tend to prefer their ancient ways.
Notes: It's known that Holdless often flock to Igen as long as they don't break any laws because most other Holds will not have them regardless of spotless reputation elsewhere. They are permitted to stay in a series of caves near the river as long as they don't cause trouble. Great dens of illicit trade have cropped up despite the admonition to behave, and it's known amongst at least the Harpers that if one wants to know something, making a contact amongst the Igen Holdless is often a good way to get information… for a price.

Igen's Holdless

Leader(s): Lord Holdless Deimos and Lady Holdless Eris
Overall Political Viewpoint: Whatever is best for them at the time
Beholden to: Unofficial alliance with Eastern Weyr by way of association with high-ranking riders.
Technology: Deimos likes playing with it.
Notes: Deimos is the son of Lady Holdless Brihela, the late leader of Pern's largest crime syndicate. She was the organizing force behind the Holdless becoming their own sort of system, and was rather like the Godfather of Pern. Her name is sometimes thrown about to scare people as if she is still alive.
Originating PCs:

  • Ch'rii, weyrbrat who fell in with the Holdless
  • Charisli, Ch'rii's much younger sister, has a loose association

Big Bay (Igen Sea) Hold

Colors: Paly, beet-red on golden yellow
Leader(s): Holder Barnel and his lady Doresdan
Heir: Unnamed
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Igen Hold, Ista Weyr
Local Crafthalls: Minor Beastcraft Hall, but every craft is represented with at least one senior member for quality control.
Technology: Big Bay doesn't import any new technology because most of it doesn't apply to their needs as a central warehousing and trading center on Pern.
Notes: Due to its location, this Hold is the main East-West trading Hold of the Northern Continent.
Originating PCs:

  • V'kale, illegitimate child of Barnel who maintains close (but secret) relationships with the Lord and Lady

Katz Field Hold

Colors: Palet, beet-red on light green
Leader(s): Holder Marden and his lady Syrana
Heir: Maren
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Igen Hold, Ista Weyr
Local Crafthalls: None
Technology: Traditional technology, no real need for anything newer.
Notes: Katz Field is known for its careful neutral stance on the notion of the new tech coming out of Landing, its Holder often sought for advice in interpreting the Charter for nearby cotholders.
Originating PCs:

  • Maura, daughter of the Holders and heir to Katz Field until her Impression

Ista Hold

Colors: Per Pale, bright orange and white
Leader(s): Lord Balnor and Lady Noria
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Ista Hold, Ista Weyr
Local Crafthalls: Minor Harper Hall
Technology: Ista's far too laid back to worry about new technology.
Notes: Ista features a tropical island culture, with most people sleeping in hammocks rather than traditional beds. There are vast groves of citron growing all over the island, as well as most of the sweet-cane that is the source of all the sweetener on Pern. Its black sand beaches are also famous for the impressive shells and scrimshaw work done by the residents. Turnover celebrations tend to happen and fill the large but often-empty Harper Hall a previous Lord built for his Lady turns past. It is also the second-largest trading center behind Big Bay (Igen Sea) Hold. Ista is also widely known for its needlethorn population, sought after by the Healer and Beastcrafts in equal measure.
Originating PCs:

Gar Hold

Colors: Pale orange and white
Leader(s): Holder Jessany and his lady Kalli
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Ista Hold, Ista Weyr
Local Crafthalls: None
Technology: Gar sees no real need for newer technology.
Notes: Not to be confused with Hold Gar in Southern Boll's territory. Gar's chief export is needlethorn, mostly to the Healers and Beastcrafters.

High Palisades Hold

Colors: On a red field, three steel-grey Bends sinister
Leader(s): Holder Zorin and his lady Katrin
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Ista Hold, Ista Weyr
Local Crafthalls: None
Technology: Traditional fishing hold tech.
Notes: High Palisades is mostly known as being the birthplace of Lord Toric of Southern, Lady Sharra of Ruatha, Mastersmith Hamian, and other members of the family that would have a large hand in the shaping of the Progressive vs. Traditional dispute and the political future of the Southern Continent.

Red Sands Hold

Colors: Bright red and white
Leader(s): Holder Grenrel and his lady Quirin
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Ista Hold, Ista Weyr
Local Crafthalls: None
Technology: Red Sands is mostly interested in fans and other such technology for keeping things cool.
Notes: Red Sands is much in demand at the Glasscraft, which sends its apprentices and journeymen to collect its namesake for use in the craft.

Rocky Hold

Colors: Green and brown
Leader(s): Holder Orien and his lady Talinnia
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Ista Hold, Ista Weyr
Local Crafthalls: None
Technology: Rocky Hold, built into the cliffs, has been cleverly designed so that cooling tech isn't really necessary.
Notes: The Hold's biggest export is smaller stone building blocks for lesser projects for the Stonemasons within the Smithcraft.

Sea Cliff Hold

Colors: Blue and green
Leader(s): Holder Ketri and his lady Lediga
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Ista Hold, Ista Weyr
Local Crafthalls: None
Technology: Sea Cliff Hold's primary concern is ensuring that the sea doesn't make the cliff-face collapse in poor weather.
Notes: Sea Cliff Hold has a startlingly deep blue harbor below the Hold with a great number of caves and grottos riddling it.

Keroon Hold

Colors: Per Fess, golden yellow, white, and peridot-green
Leader(s): Lord Terinal and Lady Selira
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Igen Weyr
Local Crafthalls: Beastcraft Hall
Technology: No new tech. It scares the runners.
Notes: Three Passes later, it's no longer remembered that Keroon is the home Hold of Moreta of Fort. She's mistakenly called Ruathan more often than not. Keroon is also home to a vast rocky dome called the Red Butte that is often used as one of a weyrling's first non-Weyr between training points.

Bayhead Hold

Colors: Green and white
Leader(s): Holder Ranzen and his lady Carin
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Keroon Hold, Igen Weyr
Local Crafthalls: None
Technology: Nothing but standard traditional tech for a minor seahold.
Notes: Bayhead is on the border of Benden Weyr's territory and sometimes visited by the Weyr's ladies when they're seeking winter fruits.

Curved Hill Hold

Colors: Yellow and green
Leader(s): Holder Metron and his lady Alynna
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Keroon Hold, Igen Weyr
Local Crafthalls: None
Technology: Standard runner hold tech, nothing new from AIVAS.
Notes: One of the Holds in the boonies of Keroon, but it's no longer remembered that Moreta visited there during her heroic flight to save Pern.

Fork Hold

Colors: Green and white
Leader(s): Holder Fergin and his lady Ezzina
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Keroon Hold, Igen Weyr
Local Crafthalls: None
Technology: No new tech.
Notes: Another of the cot in the hills Holds visited by Moreta during her famous Ride, although it's no longer remembered that she visited this specific Hold.

High Ground Hold

Colors: Pale yellow and peridot green
Leader(s): Holder Barnady and his son Barnet
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Keroon Hold, Igen Weyr
Local Crafthalls: None
Technology: A runner hold without any new tech.
Notes: Another of the Holds Moreta visited, but again, still no remembrance that she was here.

High Plateau Hold

Colors: Deep yellow and pale green
Leader(s): Holder Weyleff and his lady Ingri
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Keroon Hold, Igen Weyr
Local Crafthalls: None
Technology: A runner hold without any new tech other than some plastic fence posts.
Notes: Yet another of the Holds Moreta visited, but other than a single faded painting on a wall inside the Hold, no record of her visit.

Keroon River Hold

Colors: Light blue and pale green
Leader(s): Holder Tennik and his lady Stressa
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Keroon Hold, Ista Weyr
Local Crafthalls: None
Technology: No new tech.
Notes: Another of the Moreta-visited Holds, but it's not remembered any longer.

Waterhole (Last) Hold

Colors: Green and yellow
Leader(s): Holder Venkin and his lady Wulfrid
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Keroon Hold, Igen Weyr
Local Crafthalls: None
Technology: Nothing new for this runner hold.
Notes: Over a thousand Turns has passed since this Hold was held by the last man to ever see Weyrwoman Moreta and aging queen Holth alive. Thankfully, this history has been lost. Even more thankfully, the short story Beyond Between never, ever, happened in our timeline.

Lemos Hold

Colors: On a medium blue field, four white Eight-Pointed Stars
Leader(s): Lord Asmodis and Lady Kendalia
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Benden Weyr
Local Crafthalls: Woodcraft Hall, minor Printercraft Hall, Papercraft Hall
Technology: Lemos is only interested in new techniques for woodworking and jadecrafting.
Notes: Lemos is well known across Pern for its rich forests, particularly the Earth-derived hardwoods that Pern doesn't have (Threadfall over the centuries meant hardwoods never had a chance to properly develop on Pern.) A second resource is Jade, the crafting of which is handled by a group of Smithcrafters working in the Hold itself rather than in a separate minor crafthall.

Far Cry Hold

Colors: Medium blue and white
Leader(s): Holder Anders and his lady Jaynie
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Lemos Hold, Benden Weyr
Local Crafthalls: None
Technology: Far Cry boasts a few new bits from the Plastic Craft and Papercraft, although their requests to get their own printing press have yet to be fulfilled.
Notes: One of the minor Benden Holds, it's a more progressive mindset than others, although they're also willing to go back to old ways that most Traditionalists ignore in favor of blindly following a dogmatic viewpoint.

Plains Hold

Colors: Deep blue and silver
Leader(s): Holder Deklan and his lady Nyalla
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Lemos Hold, Benden Weyr
Local Crafthalls: None
Technology: Plains Hold is mostly unconcerned with the political fight and is only interested in better plowshares and means of improving their crops.
Notes: The breadbasket of Lemos, Plains Hold is more famous for its farms, but it can't hold up against the larger farmholds in Telgar territory.

Nabol Hold

Colors: On a brown field, a Narrow Fretty in white
Leader(s): Lord Branel and Lady Osina
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: High Reaches Weyr
Local Crafthalls: None
Technology: Nabol has no modern technology, remaining much the same as always.
Notes: Despite their long history of greedy and anti-social ways, Nabolese have improved their political standing since the unlamented death of Lord Meron earlier in the Pass. It still boasts the greatest number of firelizards (mostly greens, blues, and browns) of any landlocked Hold on Pern, leading dragonriders to nod and cite Nabol as the reason why it's a good thing that green dragons do not lay eggs.

Keogh Hold

Colors: Brown and white
Leader(s): Holder Gatty
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Nabol Hold, High Reaches Weyr
Local Crafthalls: None
Technology: Keogh doesn't have any new technology.
Notes: Known sadly for its inclusion in Nabol, it's still rebuilding its trade agreements with other Holds to regain some of its lost prestige.

Nerat Hold

Colors: Per Bend Sinister, bright orange and golden yellow
Leader(s): Lord Risdan and Lady Hendra
Overall Political Viewpoint: Progressive
Beholden to: Ista Weyr
Local Crafthalls: Farmcraft Hall, minor Vintnercraft Hall
Technology: Traditional technology, as the rainforests aren't suitable for trucking in anything involving electricity.
Notes: Nerat is famous for being one of the two places on Pern where one can get needlethorn in season. It's also home to the widest variety of liquors and red wines due to the proximity of the Farmcraft Hall. Despite the fact that the rainforests don't help with importing new tech, the Lord and his Lady are quite eager to gain any new information from AIVAS and are the only openly Progressive Hold on Pern.

Half-Circle Sea Hold

Colors: On a white field, four medium blue Half Lozenges
Leader(s): Holder Forin and his lady Tella
Overall Political Viewpoint: Traditional
Beholden to: Nerat Hold, Benden Weyr
Local Crafthalls: None
Technology: Half-Circle is a strictly traditional Hold and has systematically ignored or declined any suggested upgrades to any of their gear. However, they're quite happy to proudly note that while their dock cavern isn't the largest on Pern, they can still host their entire fishing fleet in its shelter during foul weather or Threadfall.
Notes: Only some people are aware that famous Harper Master Menolly came from Half-Circle, and even if they were, they wouldn't believe it, as Half-Circle has a much deserved reputation for staid and fiercely traditional ways.

Ruatha Hold

Colors: Chequy; bright red and dark brown
Leader(s): Lord Jexor and Lady Wedne
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral (but secretly Progressive)
Beholden to: Fort Weyr
Local Crafthalls: Minor Printer's Hall
Technology: Given its progressive nature, Ruatha keeps welcoming new technology to come out of Landing, and Smiths and the newer crafts are always pestered for the latest gear on tap.
Notes: Please note, Ruatha Hold may not be used for character origins/backstory/family/etc.
This is to respect the long-standing fandom rule against their use per Anne McCaffrey.

Plateau Hold

Colors: Red and brown
Leader(s): Holder Keris and his lady Jenna
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Ruatha Hold, Fort Weyr
Local Crafthalls: None
Technology: Nothing new in the way of technology, although promising Plateau youths are sent to the main Hold at Ruatha for training.
Notes: There are stories about the visits of previous Lord Holder Jaxom and his white dragon Ruth, girlish whispers quickly shushed by their elders.

Ruatha River Hold

Colors: Brown and blue
Leader(s): Holder Jarn and his lady Feliciana
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Ruatha Hold, Fort Weyr
Local Crafthalls: None
Technology: The river hold is currently testing an experimental river barge that is supposed to be faster and more maneuverable and also able to carry more weight than conventional ones.
Notes: The river hold's primary export is river grains.

Southern Hold

Colors: On a light green field, four emerald-green Spades
Leader(s): Lord Bailic and Lady Jessina
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Southern Weyr
Local Crafthalls: Minor Minecraft Hall
Technology: Southern's interested in any technology it can get, but mainly in a greedy fashion to keep for itself and to increase its advantage over other Holds.
Notes: Known for its lushness, Southern Hold is non-standard, with cotholds scattered all over the landscape rather than just in one central location. It's now publicly known that many landless sons of Northern Lords were smuggled into Southern in Turns past in order to give them land to Hold and prove themselves, rather than be subservient to their elder brothers. Southern is also treated somewhat warily by most other Progressive-minded people as the greed of Southern's first Lord Holder has left a distasteful impression on most of the rest of Pern.

Central Hold

Colors: On a light green field, centered, a white Lozenge
Leader(s): Holder Merien and his lady Elna
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral (more precisely, whatever Lord Southern espouses)
Beholden to: Southern Hold, Southern Weyr
Local Crafthalls: None
Technology: The only new contrivances in Central involve newer building methods more suitable to the lush and dangerous jungle that it's situated in.
Notes: Central is one of the minor Holds created during Lord Toric's landgrab earlier in the Pass and is known to follow the current Lord Southern's lead in all things.

Big Lagoon Hold

Colors: On a sea-blue field, an open Roundel of light green, centered in sea-blue
Leader(s): Holder Jorric
Overall Political Viewpoint: Traditional
Beholden to: Southern Hold, Southern Weyr
Local Crafthalls: None
Technology: No AIVAS-driven technology.
Notes: Big Lagoon is primarily a fishing Hold near Ierne Island.

Great Bay Hold

Colors: Per pale bright red and sea-blue, with a half circle of sea-blue centered and adjacent to the sea blue
Leader(s): Holder Sendet and his lady Vernis
Overall Political Viewpoint: Traditional
Beholden to: Southern Hold, Southern Weyr
Local Crafthalls: None
Technology: Nothing new, all traditional fishing fleet gear.
Notes: Great Bay is another Hold founded by Southern's past Lord, Toric, during his infamous landgrab.

Southern Boll Hold

Colors: On a white field, bright red Chevrons
Leader(s): Lord Kiril and Lady Eliora
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Fort Weyr
Local Crafthalls: Weavercraft
Technology: Given the uncertain times, Boll is careful not to antagonize either side of the political spectrum. Therefore, it only has the most basic and common sense technological improvements, such as better methods for preserving food and keeping ice without it melting.
Notes: Southern Boll is the second Hold founded, by original colony co-leader Emily Boll and her husband Pierre de Courci. However, the common wisdom says Ruatha was second, and this is incorrect, and not even AIVAS would have been able to say otherwise, as it originally went offline before any northern Hold was founded.

Hold Gar

Colors: Red and white
Leader(s): Holder Olivan and his lady Venata
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Southern Boll Hold, Fort Weyr
Local Crafthalls: None
Technology: Hold Gar is mostly concerned with tech that will help them pick cotton or otherwise gather the raw materials that they ship to the main Hold in Southern Boll for the Weavercraft.
Notes: Not to be confused with Gar Hold in Ista Hold's territory. Hold Gar is famous for its flax and cotton fields, exporting these raw goods to the main Hold to trade to the Weavers for finished products.

Telgar Hold

Colors: Per Pale, bright red, white, and medium blue
Leader(s): Lord Larion and Lady Ulena
Overall Political Viewpoint: Carefully Neutral
Beholden to: Telgar Weyr
Local Crafthalls: Smithcraft, minor Woodcraft Hall
Technology: As it's home to the Smithcraft, Telgar Hold often serves as a guinea pig for most of the latest designs from the craft, whether they are wise or not. It is the only Hold to currently have full-time electricity generated from a hydropressure dam on a nearby river.
Notes: Generally considered the richest Hold on Pern, it is certainly the largest. It's also home to the best beer on Pern, secrets of which are rarely given to non-Telgari. It also serves as the primary breadbasket of Pern due to its vast fields of grain, well larger than the minor Hold of Greenfields in Crom territory. Most northern Trader families tend to winter in Telgar, assured of good fodder for their animals and decent treatment from the Lord Holder. Woodcraft Hall used to share space with the Smiths until they got their own crafthall at Lemos, but they still keep enough crafters handy to ensure that the Smiths get proper wood products for their work.

Campbell's Field Hold

Colors: Red, white, and blue
Leader(s): Holder Shelnar and his lady Akadee
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Telgar Hold, Telgar Weyr
Local Crafthalls: None
Technology: Traditional Hold tech
Notes: No one remembers who this Campbell person was or why he or she named a field after themselves, but the Hold celebrates that person's birthday once a year at mid-summer between any other holidays floating around.

Hold Balan

Colors: White and blue
Leader(s): Holder Zandor and his lady Thenna
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Telgar Hold, Telgar Weyr
Local Crafthalls: None
Technology: Traditional tech other than some plastic fence posts.
Notes: Not to be confused with Balen Hold in High Reaches territory.

South Telgar Hold

Colors: Per Pale, bright red and medium blue
Leader(s): Holder Kerlan and his lady Magry
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: Telgar Hold, Igen Weyr
Local Crafthalls: Minor Healer Hall
Technology: Despite its odd construction (outside the west-facing cliffs), South Telgar has no other modern contrivances, relying instead on its relatively-recent construction to tide it over into the future.
Notes: Most traditionalists call South Telgar's construction insane, because it doesn't face properly east like every other traditional Hold on Pern. It also has mineral springs that are much in use by the elderly.

Tillek Hold

Colors: On a white field, a dark blue Reversed Lattice
Leader(s): Lord Elisser and Lady Garnalla
Overall Political Viewpoint: Neutral
Beholden to: High Reaches Weyr
Local Crafthalls: Seacraft Hall, Secondary Vintnercraft Hall
Technology: Tillek hasn't latched onto the latest newfangled devices flowing from the Smithcraft since the discovery of AIVAS, but is always keen to hear of new Seacraft-related knowledge.
Notes: Tillek is a rarity amongst Holds on Pern. Because the men are often at sea, women are often found in high-ranking authority positions, up to and including the Steward (called Lady Steward) as recently as early in the Pass. Knitting is also a huge activity for the regular crafters when they're not tending to the ships and seamen from the Crafthall. An adjunct of the Seacraft Hall, the shipwrights of Tillek are considered the best on Pern.
