The main Living Cavern at Eastern Weyr is a near replica of the "Lower Bowl" in shape. It is circular, with ceilings sloping up into a gentle cone shape. There are a few stalactites hanging from the ceiling, from which the Weyr's few firelizards may perch. Between these, there are a few inverted "hills", showing exactly how quickly the workmen finished this job. It lends an eerie quietness to the place, as the features cut the sound more effectively. The glowbaskets on the walls highlight the tables of all shapes and sizes around the room. The Head Table appears to be more traditional in place and kind, but the rest of the tables are variable. The east side of the room boasts larger rectangle tables suitable for whole groups of riders, while the middle holds smaller circular tables more appropriate for a family with children. The west side of the room has small square tables which often double as gaming tables on lazy days and most evenings.

Near the Head table, off to the East side, the double doors of the kitchen swing open. Near those doors, two long rectanglular tables are set up for food and drink service. On the eastern and western sides of the room, the stairs lead up to parallel hallways which connect to the rest of the Weyr. A third, smaller set of stairs at the southernmost end of the cavern leads to the Weyr Entrance.

It's nearly midnight, so the living caverns are sparsely inhabited. One of the few is Nenienne, who is sitting at a table with a bowl of stew, a roll, and a glass of fruit juice. She is idly sketching on one of a stack of hides, with emphasis on the word "idly".

Sparsely inhabited means prime time for Maura to show up. She looks a bit on the tired side this time, pausing over the food table to pick up a bowl of the stew and get a cup of whatever liquid happens to be closest. And when she turns to find a table she spies Nenienne there - so chooses to wander over and attempt to be social. "Evening. Mind if I…?" a nod of the girl,s head is given towards an empty chair at the table.

Nenienne starts slightly, then looks up at speaker. She seems to be curious, but frowning. She does nod, though, and her tone-of-voice is conversational as she says, "Hello. New, or just visiting?"

Maura's smile is entirely nonthreatening. Frankly, the girl looks about harmful as a trundlebug. So, if anything, there's a bit of relief on her face when the go-ahead is given for her to sit down. "Hi. I'm Rikath's rider, Maura. New transfer." is explained, as she slides into a seat. "Mind if I ask what you're working on?"

Nenienne says, "Not at all", her tone friendly despite her continuing frown. She slides over the top sheet, which has what looks like drawings of jewelry on it, mostly because that's exactly what it is. Almost as an afterthought, Neni adds "I'm Neni, a posted Smith here. My specialty is jewelry."

The stew bowl Maura's holding is instinctively pulled closer, to be sure nothing spatters on the drawings. And her glance is more then just cursory as her head tilts a few different angles to get more detail of the picture. "That's interesting stuff, Neni. How much do you usually charge for something simple? Like a solid clasp bracelet or a ring with no gemstone or something." she wonders, thoughtful. The other woman's frown is something she doesn't seem brave enough to comment on.

Nenienne ponders this. "Depends on the metal, mostly." She names a price for copper, silver, and gold, but warns, "Copper is cheap, but it will leave a greenish stain on skin." She ponders for a few minutes, then says, "I've also been known to use things other than metal — ask Fiala about the necklace I made for her, or check out the one I made for Vanielle. If I use found objects, I can charge a lot less." She seems about to go on, but suddenly stops herself with a chagrined look. "Oops, there I go talking about jewelry again. Let me know if I'm boring you; I'm terrible about going on for hours."

"You're not boring me." Maura protests, her smile curling upwards a bit more. "I'll have to look through my stuff. See if I have anything…" her voice trails. "What about glass? Can you make jewelry with that? " Someone is obviously percolating ideas, though not specific enough to just come out with it yet.

Nenienne nods. "Glass can be just as pretty as precious stones, too. Or I could use more common semi-precious stones in place of precious, like a rhodolite garnet for ruby or a tsavorite garnet for emerald."

Maura waves her hand a bit, at the mention of stone type. "I'm looking at sentimental value." she explains. "I want a way to memorialize… uhm, someone. Something I can wear might be a nice idea, but…" Pushing the moment of solemnity away, her cup is lifted and used as a shield of sorts to help her think. "So, how long have you been at Eastern?"

Nenienne nods about the sentimental value. "If the person was a rider, you could easily do so by getting a piece the color of the dragon. That could be a gemstone, dyed shells, or colored glass." She does some quick calculations in her head, then settles for, "I was posted here just before the first hatchings."

"That… yes, I'll have to think about what to do. Thank you. Once I decide I'll come back to you for the design." Maura decides, a million miles away in her head for a moment there. "So you've been here awhile then. Well, everyone's been here awhile compared to me! And are you always up this late, too?"

Nenienne says, "Often. I developed insomnia when I was a candidate, and it still comes back on and off. Are you insomniac, or just still getting used to the time shift?"

"I've had a bit of insomnia the past few months. I'm hoping once I settle in that it'll fade." Maura gives no real reason for it though, just states it as is. "I thought maybe something to eat might settle me tonight, but I guess not." The half empty bowl is just stared at for a minute before the girl stands up again. "Thanks for the time and company, Neni. Was a pleasure to meet you."

Nenienne nods, then says, "Have you tried warm milk? It doesn't work for me, but I've heard some people swear by it as an insomnia cure." She waves goodbye, her expression not changing. "It was good meeting you, too. Give my regards to… was it Rikath?"

Maura makes a face at the thought of warm milk, but nods once anyway. "I'll try it, thanks. And will pass on your regards to Rikath." Luckily, she won't advertise his response. It does make her grin, though, and she waves at Nenienne once more before dropping the leftover food off at the right table and disappearing outside.
